Oakland Observer on Campaign Schedule Through August

With Council meetings on break until September, OO will be more focused on dives into campaign financing, election news and fact-checking campaign platforms this month. During this time, OO will foregothe regular weekly newsletter on Monday, but articles and news roundups will appear regularly. Thanks for your support, hope to do some good work this year to help the public sort through this difficult and complicated election cycle, along with the news about what our electeds do in office that will help you make informed choices.

In the meantime, Oaklandside has done some initial overviews of candidates and campaign financing that's helpful. As a last note, late Friday, D7 candidate Treva Reid abruptly announced that she didn't file paperwork to run for re-election, and will be stepping down at the end of the year to spend more time with family experiencing health issues. Friday would have been the deadline for filing papers to run for the seat if Reid were still running. But because she's not, there's an additional five days added to the deadline, which is required whenever an incumbent is not running for the seat, like City Attorney, D1, and At-Large,

That means Monday could reveal one or more new candidates seeking to take advantage of what will be a wide open field against candidates with less name recognition and institutional ties in the Eastern-most district. More on that next week.
